Audiology deals with hearing and hearing related disorders, while Speech and Language Pathology deals with the normal and abnormal aspects of voice, speech, language and swallowing.The institute was set up due to the high demand for trained Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists and the corresponding dearth of colleges in India that provide the educational facilities in this field.

Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) Medical College, School of Optometry was established in July 1998. The School of Optometry has been constituted under the Faculty of General Surgery and is a part of Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College, Pune. It is presently situated on the ground floor of the Medical College building, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Katraj Dhankawadi Campus, Pune.
